Running this Town

The Greensburg Salem Golden Lions (3-2) came into last night's contest against the Hempfield Spartans (6-1) hoping for a rebound against their crosstown rival after suffering a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of Greensburg Central Catholic the night before. Mission accomplished.

Despite struggling early with the Spartans size, the Lions were able to pull away in the third quarter due to a balanced scoring effort. Jake Matthews led the Lions with 17 points and Drew Manley added 10, going 3-3 from behind the three point line. Nate Perry led the Spartans with 21 points but the remainder of the starting five were not able to provide much offense, with none scoring more than 5 points. After seizing control of the lead late in the third quarter, the Lions pulled away in the fourth winning the contest by a score of 47-39. The Lions will head on the road to play the Uniontown Red Raiders on Tuesday, January 5 at 7:30 P.M.

My Take

This loss showed the Lions glaring weakness: a force in the paint. With the graduation of Bobby Davis and Jerry Cooley from last year's squad, the team is left without a single starter over 6'2. Fortunately for this years team, they have plenty of talent all around that can make up for this size deficiency. Jake Matthews has been a dominant scorer from behind the three point line as well as slashing to the basket. Coupled with Raevonn Mottley's driving ability and Casey Hope's leadership at the point, I feel that the team will find success in their section.

A Foul Loss

After the final buzzer sounded at the end of tonight's contest pairing the Greensburg Salem Golden Lions (3-2) and the Greensburg Central Catholic Centurions (3-1), few fans will remember Jake Matthews 26 points and clutch performance in the fourth quarter. It is the one point that he did not get that the crowd will remember and the 53-50 GCC score will indicate.

Having a chance to tie the game for GS at 50-50 with 2 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, Matthews missed the front end of a one-and-one, ending a furious rally by the Lions in the fourth quarter. Matthews paced all scorers with 26 points, despite the miss. Jess Reed scored 15 points and P.J McLaughlin added 14 for the Centurions whose lineup was just recently completed once Ross Deglau and Trent Hurley joined the team after participating in the PIAA AA Championship in football. The Lions struggled with the Centurions size throughout the contest and trailed by 10 heading into the 4th quarter. The Lions found their shooting stroke in the fourth and took a 50-49 lead with 20 seconds remaining in the quarter. GCC took the ball down the court and Trent Hurley drew a foul and hit both shots. Matthews failed to convert and the Centurions took home a victory over the 2009 PIAA Class AAA runner up.

GS Christmas Classic

Welcome to the world of Pat McAteer and GS sports. This is my first entry and I'd like to invite any reader of this post to the Greensburg Salem Christmas Classic Tournament on Tuesday, December 29 and Wednesday, December 30. GS plays the Greensburg Central Catholic Centurions Tuesday night at 7:30 and then returns Wednesday night to play their cross town rival, the Hempfield Area High School Spartans. For all students attending, Tuesday night's student section theme will be "gangster night" and Wednesday will be a "blackout". I will be covering both of the games and I hope that you will comment and provide your own thoughts on the games for discussion. Happy holidays everyone!
