Breaking the Scotties

After suffering a difficult loss on Friday to Kittaning during severe weather conditions, the GS baseball team hoped to recover during a section match up Monday night against Southmoreland. Senior pitcher Ben Yasika proved that GS will not bow when facing adversity after pitching a complete game shutout in a 6-0 victory.

Yasika allowed zero runs on 3 hits in a 7 inning outing in which he struck out three. Throughout the game, GS struggled to get timely hits with runners on base and the team needed Yasika's near perfect performance to overcome a fine pitching performance by Southmoreland's pitching staff. GS got on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a single by senior Nate Sphon, scoring seniors Dan Ranieri and Nick Diehl. The Lions went quiet until the third inning when Ranieri drove in Diehl on a single after a hard hit triple by Diehl earlier. Senior Vinnie Mongelluzo capped the scoring in the fifth with a two RBI double, scoring Yasika and junior Jordan Truscott. Despite the lack of offense, GS showed solid pitching depth behind Sphon who is considered the ace of the staff. Pitching will be key if the Lions hope to contend for a WPIAL championship later this spring.

This Town Ain't Big Enough for the Two of Us

The GS baseball team enters the 2010 season with high expectations stemming from a solid offensive lineup and a full rotation of pitchers. If Thursday's game against Greensburg Central Catholic was any indication of the teams prospects for the season, the future is looking bright.

The Lions scored 5 runs in the first inning headed by a double by Senior Vinnie Mongelluzo off of GCC junior pitcher Nick Draghi which scored three runners. Never looking back, the team proceeded to score 16 runs in a route over the outmatched Centurions. The GCC lineup was stifled by the pitching of senior Steve Watt who allowed 2 runs on 2 hits late in the game. Dan Zerbini provided relief in the fifth inning and gave up 4 runs though the ten run rule came into effect, ending the game preemptively. The Lions were also lead by junior Jordan Truscott who batted 3-4 with a single, double, and triple while driving in one runner.

Reveling in the Rivalry

The GS Girls' lacrosse team entered the season knowing that in order to compete in their section, they would need strong play by their experienced and talented senior class. If tonight's contest was any indication, they will have no trouble competing at all.

Lead by a 6 goal effort by Lauren Vernail, the Lions had little trouble dispatching their crosstown rival, Hempfield Area. Along with Vernail's tallies, the Lady Lions had goals from seniors Hillary Dzialowski (2), Laura Laubham (2), and Claire Stewart and Emily Gabriel with one apiece. The Lady Lions controlled the ball in the offensive zone for long periods at a time and Hempfield was able to generate little offense due to the defensive efforts of sophomore sensation Kelly Dzialowski and the goal tending of senior Dakota Buhrman. Kayla Lent and Jessica Gerhardt lead Hempfield with 2 goals apiece the stagnant offense shown by Hempfield throughout the contest. While it was only the first match of the year, the results are certainly promising. The team appears to have the offensive weapons to contend for a playoff spot in the section and they will certainly be a forced to be reckoned with this year and in the future.

Batting Down the Competition

Coming into the season, the GS baseball team appears to have one of the most stacked squads in the WPIAL. MSA, a radio partner with the WPIAL, has GS ranked number one in the the league coming into the season along with 5 players on their "Players to Watch" list. I interviewed senior Ben Yasika on his opinions of the promising bunch.

Pat:What are your expectations for the season?
Ben:I think if there is any year that we could go far, this is the year.

P:Do you feel that the team has the potential to win a WPIAL championship?
B:Yes.

P:What do you feel is the teams' strength?
B:We have a solid outfield and our pitching is superb.

P:How has the team improved since last season?
B:Since we had underclassmen play last year, we have solid infield depth.

P:How do you deal with the high expectations for the team this season?
B: I think if we work as hard as we have in the preseason and remain calm we will do well.

P:What do you feel is the teams' most glaring weakness?
B: We don't have a weakness, we are solid all around.

Roaring Rackets

The GS boys' tennis team faces a struggle each year to compete against other WPIAL schools. Due to the talent pool at GS and the competition from other spring sports, the tennis team has struggled to create stability at the varsity. Jeff Breakey, a member of the team since his freshman year, believes that the team has a chance to be competitive in the near future.

Pat: What are your expectations for the season?
Jeff: I have high expectations for the for the team. We will go to the matches and do what we have to do.

P: How has the team improved since last season?
J: Our conditioning has improved greatly since last season.

P:In your opinion, why has the tennis team struggled as mightily as they have in recent seasons?
J: Most of the teams that we play have a wider pool of talent along with a better program.

P: Do you feel that the creation of a middle school team is crucial for success on varsity in the future?
J:Yeah, I do because it teachs future prospects the skills needed to play on varsity.

P: Who do you feel are the key members of the team this year?
J: John Munsch along with all of the other senior players. We are, pretty much, the mortar that holds the bricks together.

P: Do you feel that the tennis teams recieves as much regard as other boys' sports teams?
J: No, but it doesn't really matter because we continue to play regardless.

P: Do you believe that it is posible to atract athletes to the team?
J: The tennis team is an elite society that requires an invitation. If skilled athletes want to be invited then they must speak with the coach.

Track and Field: Sucess Shall We Yield?

Last season, the GS track and field team struggled to compete in their section, with formidable foes such as Hempfield Area High School. Despite the struggles of last season, team members feel that this season could be a season of change. Young talent has provided optimism for players and coaches. I interviewed senior Ethan McElhinny on his opinion on the fortunes of the team this season.

Pat:What are your expectations for the season?
Ethan:I feel like we have a chance to do as well as last year. We have a lot of good, new athletes this year.

P:Who do you expect to be key members of the team this season?
E:Benny Miller in the 800 meter, R.J Walton in the 2 mile, and Jake Matthews in the high jump.

P:What would you say is a realistic goal for the team this season?
E:Section Champions

P:What teams do you feel will provide you with the most competition in the section?
E:Definitely Hempfield and Latrobe due to their size.

P:Who was your biggest loss from last season?
E:Mike Kepple and Brian Criado without a doubt.

P:What has prevented the team, in recent years, from achieving the success that it had earlier in the decade?
E:To be honest, it's our size. We only have 20 members and it is hard to compete with larger schools in the section.

LAX: No, Not the Airport

The GS girls' lacrosse team has faced stiff competition and difficult seasons since its inception. Despite the struggles, the team continues to draw a large number of girls to tryouts and team members are optimistic over the future of the team. I was able to interview senior co-captain Carolyn Bringe on her hopes for the team this season and beyond.

Pat:What are your expectations for the season?
Carolyn:I feel that we will have a winning season and that we have a chance to win three fourths of our games.

P:Who do you expect to make an impact this season?
C:Alyssa Garofolo should have a predominant role on offense along with Sarah Orr. I see Sarah as being one of our better defenseman due to her experience.

P:Do you feel that the large number of players trying out will help the team improve?
C:I think that it could be a disadvantage to find playing time but 15 seniors are graduating so there will be experience next year.

P: After struggling last season, do you feel that the team has a chance to contend for the playoffs?
C:All of the players who were on JV are now filling in the places of departed seniors. The team unity from JV will be intertwined with varsity skills.

P:What is the biggest challenge that the team faces?
C:Ourselves because women's sports tend to be more personal than mens' sports. What goes on outside the team should not affect on field performance.

Softball Sensation

The first edition of the GS Sports Blog's will preview the girls' softball team. Despite losing key players last season, the team was able to make the playoffs. I had the opportunity to interview senior pitcher Carrie Maier on the prospects of the upcoming season and her hopes for the future of the program.

Pat: What are your expectations for the upcoming season?
Carrie:(Shrugs) I guess my personal goal is to stay injury free.

P:Who do you expect to be the impact players on the team this season?
C:We have two freshman named Jayne Oberdorf and Taylor Mehan who look really good and should help replace our losses in the infield.

P:What do you feel is the team's strength?
C:The infield because there is a lot of depth from the incoming freshman class.

P:What has been the focus of the coaches heading into the season?
C:To maintain a better attitude than last season. We had some arguments between players last season so hopefully we can improve on the chemistry.

P:Do you feel that the team is a playoff contender?
C:Yes, we've made the playoffs every year since I was a freshman so it's realistic.

A New Season

As I write this blog entry, I write in mourning. Mourning over a basketball season with so much unfulfilled promise. After hearing the news of GS's 42-25 loss to Montour, I could feel the pain of all of the senior players.I experienced this same pain after being on the field for our football teams first round exit from the WPIAL playoffs after a loss to New Castle. Fortunately for my followers, my career is not over. For the spring sports season, I plan on providing better coverage that will hopefully include all sports. If you are a member of the track and field team, girls' lacrosse team, baseball team, or any other spring sports team, come to this blog for coverage of your respective team.

This Is Not Sparta

After a grueling regular season that has left the GS boys' basketball team with a 7 seed in the WPIAL playoffs, tonight the real action begins. The Lions will face Montour High School at 8 P.M tonight at Plum High School. GS will face a young, but talented and athletic Montour team tonight that finished 13-7 and 7-5 in section 4-AAA. The Spartans are currently on a 5 game winning streak and appear to have gained momentum at the correct time. Montour also fields a lineup that has a significant size advantage over the guard-oriented Lions. Lead by 6'5 Sophomore center Dylan Buechel, Montour has found success when they have been able to dominate their opponents up front. One clear advantage that GS has is their defense. When playing against the top defenses in the WPIAL, Montour has struggled mightily. In their second game against WPIAL leading Chartiers Valley, Montour was shut down offensively, scoring only 38 points in a 68-38 loss. If GS hopes to win the game tonight, Raevann Mottley must use his athleticism to contain Buechel in the post. Along with this, Jake Matthews will need to prevent freshman guard Devin Wilson from dominating in the open court. If all of these things happen, GS will prevail. I predict a 68-58 victory for the Lions, setting up a rematch of the PIAA Semifinals last year against Hampton on Friday night.

Losing A Heartbreaker

After numberous reschedulings and foot upon foot of snow, the Greensburg Salem varsity basketball game against Laurel Highlands finally occurred Wednesday evening. Unfortunately, the lack of practice during the second winter break of 2010 showed.

Despite a 16 point scoring effort by Senior Jake Matthews, the remainder of the team struggled mightily shooting falling 49-44 to LH. Lead by the 15 points of Ethan Mildren, LH stifled GS in rebounding. After a low scoring first quarter, GS began to fall behind in the second as LH picked up their shooting effort. Despite having a 28-18 lead at the half, GS, lead by Matthews, staged a comeback and brought the score to 35-30 after three quarters. Unfortunately, GS could not reclaim the lead due to more poor shooting. Fortunately for GS, the game did not determine their playoff seeding. On Tuesday night, the team recieved a 7 seed and will play tenth seeded Montour next Tuesday at a location that has yet to be determined.

Recent News

The brutal winter of 2010 continues to take a toll on the high school basketball season. After another round of snow Tuesday night, school was canceled Wednesday along with the section match up between GS and Laurel Highlands. Due to the fact that the WPIAL is announcing playoff pairings Wednesday night, Wednesday was the last chance for the game. It appears as though the section will be split with LH taking the higher seed due to their win in the game earlier this season. It is a tough pill to swallow for GS, however, they appear to be a better team than LH at this point and time and hopefully they will prove this in the playoffs. In other news, the GS school board discussed complaints by parents and players against girls' soccer coach, Jim Morrison. Finally, girls' basketball coach Jen Yuvan and her entire staff announced their resignation last night at the meeting.

Notes 'n 'At

The lack of school this week has caused me to miss writing. Shocking, I know. But I do have a few updates for all of you. If you have not yet heard, the game against Laurel Highlands has been rescheduled for 7:30 on Monday. Since this is the most important game by far, I encourage my faithful followers to attend. Hopefully we can have a raucous student section and show the Mustangs how the Salem Psychos operate. The leaders of the student section, myself and Chris Wertz, will be introducing a new chant that was brought to my attention by Senior basketball player John Munsch. I don't want to ruin the surprise, so please come out and see if for yourself. I hope to see all of you there, and I hope that everyone still remembers where their classes are on Monday.

Ice Age

Well it appears that the gargantuan section match up between Laurel Highlands and GS is off for tonight. The disappointment is killing me right now because I was really looking forward to this one. Hopefully the teams find time before the playoffs to play this one because the winner will most likely take section 3-AAA. Since there's not much to write about in GS sports right now, how about that Superbowl? I was stunned to see the Saints pull out that victory. While Drew Brees earned his MVP award for that game, the true winner has to be Sean Payton. The onside kick call at the beginning of the second half was quite possibly the gutsiest call in Superbowl history. As shocked as I was to see the call, it made sense for the situation. The Saints simply wanted to keep the ball out of Peyton Manning's hands and they did just that by converting the opportunity. Every once in awhile, a coach needs to make a game changing call. Take for example the play in Superbowl XL where Antwaan Randle El received the pass from Ben Roethlisberger and proceeded to throw it to Hines Ward for the touchdown. Was it a risky call? Of course. But when you are trying to win a championship, sometimes the tough calls have to be made. So here's to good coaching and for the survival of the winter of 2010.

Leashing the Scotties

Southmoreland came into the contest against GS tonight with nothing to lose. Unfortunately, confidence does not win championships.

After a slow first quarter in which GS and Southmoreland came out tied 13-13, GS rolled over the Scotties with their superior talent and athleticism. Jake Matthews scored 22 points in the balanced GS offense that has been lights out all season due to their excellent shooting. After pulling away in the second quarter, the GS put on a show in the third as T.J Olesky added 8 points. The fourth quarter, like many games this season, was mostly a showcase of J.V talent. In a huge development for the team, Junior Guard Dave Nowicki returned from an injury that he suffered in the second week of the football season and scored 7 points. Nowicki's return is huge for the team; he was a starter for GCC last season. Nowicki can play both guard spots and provide a toughness for the squad. His ball handling also appears to be better than any other player on the team, and this could be key to a deep playoff run this year. The match up this month against Laurel Highlands will be the biggest game of the year thus far and it will provide a glimpse into the future for this talented GS team.

Still Alive

Hey guys (especially Mr. Lenzi)I wanted to make sure you all know that I'm still working on this blog. I've been busy with the play lately and I missed the Connelsville game. I've been trying to make it to a few girls games but I really haven't had a chance lately. But anyway I'll provide a little analysis here. GS still appears to be one of the top teams in the WPIAL. The main issue for them right now though is going for the section title. While Laurel Highlands is a formidable opponent,I feel that GS matches up very well with them. I honestly do not believe that any team in the section other than Laurel Highlands can defeat GS and the match up between the two teams at GS in February will most likely determine the section winner. The WPIAL playoffs are a whole different story. Chartiers Valley appears to be stacked, despite not having star sophomore Wayne Capers Jr. on the court. T.J McConnell continues to show why Duquesne offered him a scholarship his junior year despite his size. Hampton also appears to be every bit as good as they were last year when the won the WPIAL title and then lost in the state semifinals to this one team, someone please remind me who that was.... If GS wins the section, they have a very good chance at winning a WPIAL championship. This team has experience along with balanced scoring. The rest of the season should be exciting.

Down to the Wire

When Casey Hope is on, the GS boys' basketball team does not lose. Not only does Hope have this prestigious distinction, he also has found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow (just kidding.)

Behind Hope's 24 points, GS overcame a slow start to win 59-52 over Indiana last night at the GSHS Gymnasium. Kevin Stapleton led Indiana with 21 points and was key in a third quarter comeback for Indiana. After both teams combined for 9 points in the first quarter, GS found their shooting touch behind the sweet shot of Jake Matthews. A turnover plagued third quarter led to an Indiana run in the third where they would eventually take the lead. Despite the slow third quarter for the Lions, Trey Parsley hit a clutch three pointer at the end of the quarter to put GS up 40-38. The first half of the fourth quarter was an up and down affair, but Hope once again through with two steals that lead to fast break points. GS eventually pulled ahead and took the lead for good.

The Fall of the Trojans

If only the Derry Area Trojans were as successful as the actual Trojans in their attack against the opponent's defense...

In a Section 3-AAA match up tonight at the GSHS Auditorium, GS completely dominated Derry winning 77-25. During finals week for the GS players and student fans, this was a laugher. Jake Matthews lead the Lions with 12 points in limited action due to the lead that GS posted on hapless Derry. Derry was plagued by turnovers the entire game and did not score a point until there was a minute left in the first quarter. GS dominated with sheer athleticism and talent and Derry's players were pressured all night. The fourth quarter served as a fifth quarter to the JV game, and few varsity players participated in the action. While this game was an obvious outclassing by GS, it provided solid experience for the talented JV squad as well as providing the varsity players a break during the long season.

Notes n' 'At

-GS boy's basketball went into the game against Southmoreland last night looking to unload some frustration after a disappointing loss to Laurel Highlands on Friday night. Poor, poor little Scotties. Behind a 20 point effort from Jake Matthews, GS rolled to a 73-50 victory over the outmatched Southmoreland squad.

-Jake Matthews put his name in the GS record books last night as he surpassed the 1,000 point mark. Matthews is a three year starter for the team and has proven to be the star on this years team. He was also a key contributor during last year's run to the state final. Congratulations Jake and good luck at Cornell!

-GS will take on Derry on Tuesday night at 7:30 at the GSHS Gymnasium. My prediction is that GS will have no trouble with this Derry team and produce a big win.

Mid Season Awards

Whats up ya'll? So after sulking over hearing the result of the game against LH last night (GS lost 67-62 in OT) I decided to pick my mid season award winners to comfort the players and the members of the Salem Psychos. Enjoy!

Team MVP: Jake Matthews
Matthews has been nothing short of outstanding this year and is certainly living up to the hype that he had coming into the season. He will soon pass the 1000 point mark and has lead the Golden Lions to a solid start with his sweet shooting and his leadership. Cornell picked up a good one when Matthews signed with them and GS is lucky to have a player of his caliber.

Most Improved Player: Casey Hope
Hope epitomizes the GS mindset of being and underdog. Despite his stature, Hope has made it a smooth transition from the days of Chris Klimchock. There were many other candidates for this award since the entire lineup other than Matthews are new but the fact that Hope had to replace Klimchock put him over the edge.

Defensive MVP: Raevann Mottley:
Ok, I know that defensive MVP is a football award but Mottley truly deserves this title. Despite being only 6'2, Mottley has provided a presence in the post that has prevented teams with more size from taking advantage of the small GS lineup. Mottley almost reminds me of Dejuan Blair (though obviously much smaller) because of his long arms and his vertical leap. He also provides a physicality to the team that his reflective of his play on the football field.

Best Game: GS vs. Hempfield
This game was everything that it was hyped up to be and more. After falling behind the Spartans in the first half, GS stormed back in the second and pulled out a huge victory in the heated rivalry due to hot shooting from all around. Did it give me any closure after being on the field for the 40-7 massacre in football? Oh not even close. The Psychos were able to hold their chins up high and talk a little trash...just a little.

King of the Hill

On Friday night, GS will take on Laurel Highlands in a battle between the top teams in the section. This will be a tough game for both teams due to the lethal scorers. Unfortunately, I will not be able to cover this game because of the travel involved. I will however give you a preview of the contest. The key to the success of GS will be their defense. Ethan Mildren of Laurel Highland is a threat from the inside and out and I feel that GS may have trouble guarding him in a man-to-man defense because no one on the team has comparable size to him. Limiting the amount of looks that LH get from behind the 3 point line will be key for GS. If they are able to slow down LH, I feel that they have the ability to pull away with their balanced offensive attack. LH, like most other WPIAL teams, will have trouble defending the dual-threat Jake Matthews who can bring a team down on the drive or from behind the three point line. My prediction is a 63-58 victory for GS.

Tuesday, January 12, 2010

My Take

This victory showed once again how lethal GS is all around. The shooting on the team is impressive and I would be willing to say that this years team may be more balanced that last years state runner up team. Despite the slow start tonight, GS was able to cruise ahead to an easy victory due to hot shooting all around. As I have said before, Raevonn Mottley's presence on the floor is key to the teams success. His rebounding as well as his slashing style allows for dangerous shooters all over the floor to get open. T.J Olesky continues to provide a presence from behind the 3 point line and Casey Hope continues to prove the doubters wrong who said that he could not replace start point guard Chris Klimchock. Paul Sapotichne has done a great job in developing this team and they have a lot of potential.

The Mount isn't looking too Pleasant

The first half of the Greensburg Salem boy's basketball game against Mt. Pleasant (5-6) looked more like one of the numerous football games that the two schools have played against each other in the past. Unfortunately for Mt. Pleasant, Greensburg Salem took it to the hardwood in the second half.

After both teams played a rather ugly first half plagued by turnovers and missed shots, the Lions were able to pull ahead during a furious run in the third quarter where they outscored Mt. Pleasant 25-11. Jake Matthews lead all scorers with 20 points and Casey Hope added 18 to the explosive offense. Mt. Pleasant struggled to score in the second half and once Matthews starting hitting shots in the third and fourth quarter, they were unable to stop the bleeding. The Lions continued to pour it on in the fourth quarter and won the game by a score of 70-48.

My Take Pt 2.

The contest last night showed the true potential and heart of Greensburg Salem. Beating Uniontown to loose balls and out-rebounding them significantly, the Lions showed that they are ready for section play. The team also answered the question of whether they could succeed without having a big game from Jake Matthews. Matthews unselfishly setup his teammates throughout the game, allowing for the offense to dominate the sluggish Uniontown defense. The question that obviously remains is will this play continue? I felt that the victory over Hempfield showed that this team has the potential to have another special season. With the leadership of Matthews, a key contributor to last year's state runner up team, I feel that anything is possible.

Starting Out With a Bang

The Greensburg Salem boys' basketball team showed section 3-AAA last night that they mean business in a 74-46 victory over Uniontown last night.

The Lions offense rolled from the outset and the Red Raiders were unable to slow down their hot shooting. Casey Hope lead all scorers with 15 points and Trey Parsley contributed 13. Semori Wilson lead the Red Raiders with 15 points, though the rest of the team struggled mightily. Greensburg Salem beat Uniontown to most of the loose balls throughout the contest as well as holding a significant edge in rebounding. Though Uniontown succeeded in their plan to defend Jake Matthews, he was able to contribute by setting his teammates up, as the Lions opened up a large lead in the first quarter and carried it throughout the game.
