A Foul Loss

After the final buzzer sounded at the end of tonight's contest pairing the Greensburg Salem Golden Lions (3-2) and the Greensburg Central Catholic Centurions (3-1), few fans will remember Jake Matthews 26 points and clutch performance in the fourth quarter. It is the one point that he did not get that the crowd will remember and the 53-50 GCC score will indicate.

Having a chance to tie the game for GS at 50-50 with 2 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, Matthews missed the front end of a one-and-one, ending a furious rally by the Lions in the fourth quarter. Matthews paced all scorers with 26 points, despite the miss. Jess Reed scored 15 points and P.J McLaughlin added 14 for the Centurions whose lineup was just recently completed once Ross Deglau and Trent Hurley joined the team after participating in the PIAA AA Championship in football. The Lions struggled with the Centurions size throughout the contest and trailed by 10 heading into the 4th quarter. The Lions found their shooting stroke in the fourth and took a 50-49 lead with 20 seconds remaining in the quarter. GCC took the ball down the court and Trent Hurley drew a foul and hit both shots. Matthews failed to convert and the Centurions took home a victory over the 2009 PIAA Class AAA runner up.

  1. Sounds like a tough loss, but it's good to hear they fought back in the fourth quarter and never gave up. Hopefully they can bounce back tomorrow against a very good Hempfield team.
